      <image:title>About</image:title>
<image:caption>ARTIST STATEMENT Deborah is an Interdisciplinary artist who considers materials as instruments with a voice, each with a unique language and history. She uses textiles, weaving, ceramics, sculpture, and painting to explore the precarity of human relationships and our interconnectedness to nature. Themes in her work involve recall, recalibration, and renewal. Her research-driven practice is informed by her former profession as a PICU nurse and residing in many places while married to a military pilot.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - EARTH</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece is inspired by Otobong Nkanga’s piece “Weight of Scars”, and my research on the weaponization of water. Growing up on a farm, I realized early the interdependency between the land, animals, and humans. This piece explores how we live together and with nature. Can we connect the Anthropocene epoch to human desire for power and sustained oppression?</image:caption>

<image:caption>For this sculpture I used discarded trees that were cut down at UC Berkeley because of disease, and scrap copper. In light of my experiences over the past few years, I felt compelled to give this material a second life. I created an object with the joints and scale of a body and turned it upside down.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Silenced</image:title>
<image:caption>My piece questions what happens when private spaces are not safe spaces. How do we address this issue? Specifically, I am raising awareness about ACE's, which the CDC is calling a public health crisis. I am also influenced by about Donna Hylton's book, "A Little Piece of Light." She addresses the relationship between ACE's and incarceration. Recently over seventeen hundred children died from abuse in a twelve-month period.</image:caption>
